The Atlanta Opera releases ‘Orfano Mondo’

The Atlanta Opera has world premiered “Orfano Mondo”, Ryan McKinny’s surrealist series of short films, on its Spotlight Media streaming platform. These short films give the viewer an inside look into the struggle of making art during the pandemic and feature iconic moments from Pagliacci and The Kaiser of Atlantis.

Ryan McKinny both created and stars in them, in collaboration with filmmaker Felipe Barral. The first four episodes out of the series of eight are already available for rent.

Featuring footage from The Atlanta Opera’s recent productions of Pagliacci and The Kaiser of Atlantis, each video aims to recontextualize an aria with behind-the-scenes moments combined with scenes filmed for the project.

“This series of eight chapters isn’t just about the stories of the characters in the operas, but the story of the artists who embody them. How it feels to sing in a mask, behind plastic, in a circus tent, for an adoring audience, while contemplating not only the mortality of your character, but your own. I wanted to give people a feeling of what it was like to be there,” McKinny said in a press release.
